Beginning Hypothesis What might be happening with this family is a lack of communication and rigid boundaries between family members. The rationale behind this hypothesis is due to the lack of healthy contact and connections within the family. For instance, Michael and Ronald rarely communicate. There is also a lack of contact and intimacy between Ronald and Audrey. Thus, primary model will be the structural model, which consists of the set or functional demands or codes that organized the way family members interact with one another (Goldberg and Goldberg, 2008). The concepts in the structural model that relates to the family are boundaries, subsystems, hierarchy, and wholeness. The first concept that should be addressed with the family is boundaries. According to Minuchin (1974), boundaries refer to invisible barriers that regulate the amount and type of contact one has with others. They are the â€Å"rules defining who participates, and how† (Minuchin, 1974, p. 53). Boundaries are directly associated with the interaction and communication within a subsystem. For instance, the family seems to ignore problems rather than address them between each other. In addition, the family should be aware of boundaries and rules between each family member. Boundaries can be described as diffuse, rigid, or clear. Currently, in the family there are rigid boundaries between the different subsystems.
